The straight run is the oldest form a stair can take, and the least forgiving. With no curve to carry the eye, everything depends on proportion — the rhythm of the rise, the reveal of each tread, the line a stringer draws through a room. Our Straight collection is that geometry refined to its essentials: a custom straight staircase designed, forged, and installed by a single Toronto atelier. We build in rift-cut white oak, blackened steel, hand-forged wrought iron, and structural glass, taking on few enough projects that each one is drawn, modelled, and made properly. From first consultation to finished installation, most projects run six to ten weeks. The result is quiet, exact, and built to be walked every day for decades.
Design & Engineering
A straight stair hides nothing. There is no curve to soften a joint, no landing turn to reset the eye; every line runs parallel or it visibly does not. So the work is discipline. We begin with hand drawings, then a 3D model of your exact stairwell, revised without charge until you approve it. The geometry is resolved there — a consistent rise from first step to last, treads set to a single rhythm, stringers drawn as one unbroken line. Steelwork is forged in our own shop rather than ordered in, which lets us hold tolerances a catalogue part never could. Many of our straight runs are built with open risers, so the structure reads as a series of level planes and the wall behind stays part of the room. Installation is complete in three to seven days.
Materials
The Straight collection is built from four materials, each chosen for how it behaves in a long, uninterrupted line. Rift-cut white oak gives treads a straight, even grain and a pale honey tone that finishes light or dark with equal elegance. Blackened steel — hot-blackened carbon steel with a sealed matte finish — carries a deep graphite tone with subtle hand-worked surface variation, our choice for modernist schemes. Wrought iron, forged in-house, brings weight and shadow to balustrades where a more traditional character is wanted. And for railings that disappear, we use optically clear low-iron glass, tempered and laminated, specified at 15–19mm depending on span, with polished edges and structural calculations on every panel. Nothing is veneer, laminate, or composite. Solid stock throughout.
