MODERN GLASS

A glass staircase changes how a house holds light. Low-iron treads and rails let daylight pass through the core of a home rather than stopping at the stairwell, so a hallway two rooms away brightens with the morning. This is the Modern Glass collection: transparent, luminous, and built to a standard most fabricators will not attempt. Every commission begins with a complimentary in-home consultation. We draw by hand first, then model in three dimensions, and revisions cost nothing until you approve. One Toronto studio designs the staircase, forges its metalwork, and installs it — no subcontracting, no veneer, no compromise between what was drawn and what stands in your hall. We take on few commissions at once, and it shows in the work.

Glass carries load differently from timber or steel. It does not flex and forgive; it either holds or it fails, which is why every panel in this collection is engineered before it is ever cut. We specify low-iron glass at 15 to 19 millimetres depending on span, tempered and laminated, with structural calculations run on each individual panel. Treads are supported so the glass works where it is strongest, and rail panels are fixed with hardware machined from marine-grade stainless. Edges are polished, not merely eased — on a transparent material, the edge is the detail you live with. The geometry is deliberately quiet: clean runs, precise reveals, and shadow lines thin enough that the structure seems to recede and the light does the work.

Three materials, each doing what it does best. Low-iron glass is the reason the collection exists: optically clear, without the green cast of ordinary glass, tempered and laminated for structure, and cleaned without chemicals. Marine-grade 316 stainless steel, satin-brushed to a soft silver sheen, provides the rail hardware and cable work — hard-wearing, corrosion-proof, and content to stay in the background. Where warmth is wanted, we introduce rift-cut white oak — calm, linear grain in a pale honey tone, taken light or dark to suit the scheme. An oak tread over a glass rail softens the scheme without dimming it; a fully glazed run keeps the composition at its most transparent. We select and finish every component in our own studio, and we use no veneer, laminate, or composite anywhere.

This collection is commissioned by homeowners renovating toward light: modernist builds where the stair stands at the centre of an open plan, and narrow Toronto houses where a solid flight would darken half the main floor. Daylight passes through the stairwell instead of ending at it, and sightlines run uninterrupted from front door to garden. Underfoot, laminated glass is quieter than most people expect — dense and solid, with none of the drum-like resonance of a framed timber stair. To a future buyer it reads as considered architecture rather than a renovation trend. From first consultation to finished staircase takes six to ten weeks, and we serve Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, and the wider GTA.
